If you’ve been reading this blog for a long time or you know me in real life you are quite aware that I’m very colorful. I pride myself on the fact that sometimes in a sea of grey and black coats I’m the one wearing hot pink, or apple green, or orange. My collection of tights is like a rainbow. My home is full of color and the artwork that I love is also colorful.
Yesterday we went to a celebration with friends in the afternoon and everyone kept commenting on how colorful I was. I had on a colorblocked dress with shades of pink, dark orange and purple, pink tights and a bright pink coat. That was just my normal work attire, nothing special but sometimes I forget that my normal isn’t everyone else’s standard of normal – and I’m totally okay with that.
This morning in the car with my husband we were discussing colors. He has mid range colorblindness, he knows colors but has difficulty deciphering them when they’re close together or too similar in tone. He saw something as black and I told him it was navy blue. His response to me, “the world you see must be really vivid, huh?” I laughed, realized it really is a vivid world I see and had to smile. I hope I always see the world in bright vivid color, it makes it so much happier to me that way.
Since Thursday was 3.14 (Pi Day) and since my husband and I are kind of nerdy I decided to make pie to celebrate being nerds. I mean, when else do I have a random reason to make pie?! I bought a premade deep dish pie shell at the grocery store and made a chocolate chip and hazelnut pie. It was delicious.
I also made a great discovery on Thursday, apparently I come in pillow form! My favorite sale site is Fab.com and I found the My Name is Simone pillow in Josephine but realized she bares a very close resemblance to ME!! How hilarious is that? I decided since this might only happen once in a blue moon I should just order the pillow. I’m eagerly awaiting its arrival.
On Sunday my husband and my cousin who is in college in DC went on a DC tour via segway. I bought a Groupon a while back for a segway tour through Bike the Sites so my Dad could go but he ended up going out of town. My 20 year old cousin had apparently always wanted to ride a segway and she jumped at the chance when we invited her to come with us.
I have to admit I was a bit more of a cautious rider than those two but I could tell how much fun they had. They were zipping and racing around the Lincoln monument and smoothly navigating the DC streets. By the time the two and half hour tour was over even I didn’t want to get off the segway.
It was so much fun we even got over having to wear yellow helmets (obviously safety first but could the helmets have at least been black?!).
I love that I work in DC and live in the suburbs but I totally think you have to enjoy the city you’re in to the fullest. I love touring the sites, going to the museums, the cherry blossom festival – it’s part of what makes DC great. If you get to visit DC or live near a major city and can do a segway tour I highly recommend it. I’m definitely going to buy tickets to the one in Annapolis for the spring and take my Dad then. It was so much fun it actually makes me think about buying a segway for myself! If only…
Recently my girl Jess has gotten back into crocheting. I think all of my knitting and love of yarn made her want to pick up her crochet hook again and get creative. I’m telling you, knitting is therapeutic and just amazing to see something come to shape. This yarn is my absolute favorite, Manos del Uruguay Maxima yarn in Highlighter. It is just shockingly neon and so soft. I had previously knit it into a simple triangle scarf but it didn’t drape well so I took it apart and rewound it and now I’m making a cowl so I can have a bright neon pop with my outfit. I’ll share the finished product when I’m done. I also thought I’d share the other two projects that I’ve recently completed for myself.
My absolute favorite hat (since I just started to make hats this year) is the Lucy hat from the Winter 2012 issue of Knitscene (yes, I’m a knitting nerd and I know it). I love the asymmetrical turned up brim and I love the colors I picked. I have a very bright hot pink coat that I’m wearing right now and I liked using burgundy instead of black, not as dark and heavy.
The second hat is the Feather & Fan hat and it was a free pattern from Cascade Yarns. I used Berroco Versa yarn in Vesuvai, I bought the yarn for myself as a birthday gift. I loved the rainbow color and pattern and decided to save it until I found the perfect project and this was it. Total knitting nerd and totally in love with it. I’m going to New Orleans this week for a vacation and I’m sifting through my yarn stash to figure out what will come with me to work on during the week. I’ve got some Christmas gifts to get finished!
A lot has happened in the two weeks since I posted. I’ve been travelling, working, knitting…oh and there was a hurricane that came through our area. I feel horrible for the folks in New Jersey and New York who have lost so much. We got it pretty mildly here in Maryland and I only had some minor flooding in my basement and I couldn’t imagine losing my home. So in the midst of that devastation I thought I’d share something that just makes me smile.
I’m not a huge Halloween person but when I saw this pattern for a candy corn costume to knit in September I called my girlfriend and asked if this would be too embarrassing for my godson. She thought it was too cute and I prepared to knit this little cocoon and pointy cap, perfect for a 3 month old. It even had little arm holes so he could get his fingers in his mouth. And yesterday when I took his picture I found out that it was national candy corn day – so appropriate! Happy Halloween!
